Factors that cannot be changed:
increasing age
gender: more males than females have strokes
race: African Americans are at greater risk
heredity: if someone in your family has had a stroke, then you have a higher risk of having a stroke yourself
Factors that can be managed with medical treatment and/or adjusted lifestyle:
high blood pressure
diabetes mellitus
cigarette smoking
previous mini-stroke (TIA)
high cholesterol
obesity
heart disease
